Which Reseller Host Best Matches Your Needs?
Saturday, June 26th, 2010The term reseller hosting is a somewhat generic one that is loosely applied to a few different kinds of web hosting. This is not a strict definition of the type of web hosting being offered, but actually describes how the provider is offering it to you.
Hosting resellers purchase large web hosting accounts from large web hosting companies and then they bundle up the space and bandwidth and sell chunks of it to their customers. They are more or less mimicking the services that are usually offered from web hosting companies but they are eliminating some of the expensive overhead that usually comes with running one of these large companies. This is a business model that is common with a couple of different types of companies, most usually web design companies that want to offer hosting as a bundle to their clients, start up web hosts, and also companies that are building a very large portfolio.
Hosting resellers will offer their services as dedicated solutions, shared, or VPS (see part two). Since they reseller usually is purchasing the web space from the larger host in bulk, they are able to bundle and resell the space at a discount to the end user. The biggest impediment that you can find when using reseller hosting services is that the reseller is frequently also a customer of the larger hosting company that they initially bought the space from. While the more advanced resellers will offer advanced support services to go with their product, this still means that if you have a problem that the reseller cannot solve by themselves they will have to get in touch with the larger company and this will greatly slow down the whole support process for you.
Dave will only find reseller hosting to be useful if he figures out that he can sell hosting services to other people or if he thinks he can expand his portfolio of sites. If he was not specifically looking for either one of these services then it would be more likely that he should stick with Share Hosting- the most common brand of web hosting that is the most popular and would have the most use.
At this point though, if Dave thinks that he only needs his single site but he would rather have more control over how that site performs or he wants to implement some redesigns, he will be happy with what he has.
