Can Yahoo Create A Home Page That Will Bring Customers Back?

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Although many feel that the decline in popularity of search engines is due to Bing, the new search engine from Microsoft, it appears that there is more to it then that. In December of 2009, Yahoo was at 22% for customer searches; in January of 2010 it had decreased to 17%. Is this something that Bing can really be responsible for?

Yahoo has always played a far second to Google, and while most are aware of this the answer may actually be less about their actual search results and more about their home page. An often overlooked aspect of these search engines is there search page, but upon close examination, this may be the answer as to why some search engines succeed while others fail miserably.

The Google and Bing home pages are very simple. And while they do provide their customers with something to look at they are not overwhelming pages for someone to deal with. This could in fact be the reason for Bing’s growing success over the past several months, they have made a very simple homepage, that when held up next to Google, seems to have some very similar characteristics.

The imaginary on the home page is easy and pertains to global issues. There are a few standard links, upon Bing, but they are away to the side and don’t intervene with the search box, or drown the users with what to do. This is a great deal contrary to Yahoo that has links as well as pictures all around causing the site to be a blurring mess. Still while Yahoo admits you to make your personal homepage, everything cab be all the same extremely cluttered up and confusing. This is likewise an error that was constructed by the one time favorite AOL, who had forfeited several of their customers to Google.

Yahoo may be able to redeem themselves by simplifying there page, but it may be a little too late. In order for a search engine to succeed it must be simple and user friendly, and since so many users have already left Yahoo for Google or Bing, it will be difficult for them to get these customers back.

Facing Recession With SEO

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

The world is currently going through one of the biggest economic crises, and this has led everyone looking for new techniques to market their businesses, and attract a strong customer base. This continuing crisis is making all the business owners think that what will be the best marketing strategy that will keep them ahead of the other companies.

The use of the internet for marketing has certainly proved helpful, as there is a huge portion of the population, which has become accustomed to using the internet for search, for products, and solutions for their needs. Almost all companies in the modern world, whether they sell products, or render services for their customers, have their own websites, which provide detailed information about the company, and its products, and services.

When an organisation wants to increase its customers, or to state simply, when a company wants to expand, it looks for more, and more customers, and the marketers use methods, and techniques to attract more, and more potential customers towards the company. In the modern world of technology, the internet is being utilised intensively for this purpose, especially for organisations, which are related to technology directly or indirectly.

The website of a company should provide information about the company and the products is important, but another important step is to direct traffic to this website. Consumers all over the world are looking for products through search engines like Google, and Yahoo, and the list goes on. What the company is concerned about is that whenever a potential customer searches for something similar to their product, the search engine should show the link of their website among the top results.

If you are using a search engine to find something, the chances are that you will only browse through the first or maybe second page of results to find it. This has also been proved through a research. Now this means that the list of links that appear on the first couple of pages have a higher chance of getting hits compared to the others. All this has resulted in companies trying stay on top of the search result list, and the specialised method to do so is called Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).

In SEO, you follow a set procedure that to enhance the visibility of your website for the algorithm of the search engine to read, and display the link to the web site in the first few search results. This means that more traffic would visit the website, and there is a higher chance of obtaining new customers.

If a product is getting more exposure, it has more chances of convincing people that it holds the solution to their particular need, and a greater fraction of these people will actually buy the product. Therefore, this becomes a very good tool to fight against recession. Sales are dropping everywhere, every company is trying to increase their customer base, and SEO is the way to go.

There are other forms of marketing that can help any company attract more customers, but SEO is very useful for an organisation that is looking to expand into the international market, and look for new sale points beyond the country of origin.
